Standing before the Hall of Supreme Harmony in the vast courtyard of the Forbidden City, the sense of solemn expanse is something no photograph can completely recreate. Crimson walls, gilded glazed tiles, and carved white marble balustrades reflect centuries of sunlight. Every stone step and flying eave silently bears witness to the rise and fall of dynasties.
Wandering among the layered courtyards, the quiet crimson walls shut out the bustle of the modern world. Sunlight filters through double eaves onto lacquered pillars, where time itself seems suspended in the dance of light and shadow.
2. Jingshan Park: A Panoramic Vista of the Forbidden City#
Leaving through the Gate of Divine Prowess (Shenwumen), I climbed the stone path to Wanchun Pavilion atop Jingshan Park. This is undoubtedly the finest vantage point in Beijing. At dusk, sitting on the steps near the Drum Tower while flocks of pigeons wheel overhead with melodic whistling bells, the aroma of handmade zhajiang noodles drifts from a nearby alley — the authentic, enduring heartbeat of old Beijing.

Tracing the arc of history leads finally to the East Third Ring Road — the modern core of the Beijing CBD. Landmarks like the CCTV Headquarters and the CITIC Tower (China Zun) pierce the horizon, while evening traffic flows like ribbons of light below. Here, ancient memory and forward-looking ambition engage in a timeless dialogue.
